- First, call the number on the back of your health insurance card to verify if Physical Therapy (PT) is a covered benefit. Ask the agent how much PT is covered, and what your financial responsibility would be. It is not required by law to have a referral from your doctor to attend Physical Therapy, but some insurance companies still require one for PT to be a covered benefit.
